INFLUENCE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT) ON SECRETARY EMPLOYABILITY

CHAPTER ONE

  • INTRODUCTION

Access to information and communication technology (ICT) is a veritable factor in relationship within the communities of the world. The role of ICT Involves the Enhancement of information that gears proper understanding between people living in the community. The knowledge and access, to ICT determine the effect of their Contributions to and impact towards followership acquisition of the basic employable skills. Contributing to this, Akuregwu, Udida and Uni (2007) assert that lack of skill- oriented education acquired by majority of our university graduates accounted for high unemployment rate that start at 27.9% as at 2005

Information and communication Technology can be defined as computer based tool used by people to work with the information communication processing needs of In organization. It includes the computer hardware and softwares, the network and several other devices-video, audio, photograph cameras, computer set, laptops and for >n that convert information-text, images sounds motions and so on into common digital form corroborating this is Miken exchange on education technology (1999) which conformed that ICT is a tool of tremendously Help in improving the quality of teaching and learning in university and acknowledge that it is not only in Nigeria but world over that ICT has become natural part of many daily life cutting across academics, business and human endeavours.

Computer Age, Space Age, Information Age, are some of the terms used in describing the period in which peoples now find themselves. These terms allude to one fact, that we live in a highly technological period or in other words technological Age. Kenneth (2001).

New information systems -has captured the. secretarial profession and made it challenging. The effect of electronic development has become a viable reality in our days.

The use of an information system reduces the long man-hour to, a pressing bottom, thus making the world a global village where contact could be made between people in various continents in a matter of seconds.

The stereo-typical image of the secretary as a servant to the boss is fading, today, secretaries are seen as partners working side by side with their bosses and taking responsibility for more decision making tasks, though secretaries have always Assessed intelligence and initiative, current technological advances especially with computers which have made it easier for a secretary to be recognized within a company or organization.

Secretaries no longer need to type various versions of form letter, they now have time to exhibit management new talents and abilities. A secretary spends more time composing correspondence, packages to prepare information.

It is no more a tale of traditional office with the tense-looking secretary.  The work of the secretary is now becoming’ enviable with the new electronic devices in the office. The automated office lowers greater efficiency, high productivity; better qualify work and lower cost of services.

With the usage of automated equipment, there is a standardized procedure to process communication quickly and accurately. In any environment where information system is used, tasks are generally organized according to work specialization. These modern technological system save time, money and effort.

According Adwunmi (2002) who opined that the place of the secretary was threatened by the advent of the modern, information system, particularly the computer. The electronic invention has formally repositioned the secretary in the modern public organization.

This modern information is aimed at bringing out the best of the secretary for greater efficiency. The end product of using the automated equipment by secretaries has led to increased output in the public sector.

The use of computer has also produced the need to use a systematic chain of instruction for the manipulation of data called program. The information and communication technology has also moved filling of document in file cabinets to diskettes, flash drives and other sophisticated devices that made storage and retrieval of information a lot earlier, thereby enhancing the performance of secretaries in modern organizations.

Information systems are also used by secretary for clerical tasks such as registering students, storing students’ data, solving schedule problems, etc.

Students are also taught data processing, programming, etc with computers Jerome (2006). Through tele/video conferencing, a modern secretary can participate in meetings and/ or conferences abroad without necessary traveling to the meeting venue. These modern equipments have therefore proved very useful instructional materials for a modern secretary.

The lack of adequate technical knowledge has been a very influential problem as regards the complex and sophisticated nature of computer and its operational procedure.

Besides, there is also the problem of unstable/irregular power supply. The incessant power failure in our society sometimes calls for question; “can the computer actually be put to its optimum use”? This becomes a fundamental problem to the ICT students as study may suffer in the process.

In the other hand, the use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) has made it easy for fraud and embezzlement by electronics criminals” to use incriminating personal information to blackmail individuals, and, when such happen, they put the students in a professional fix.
